The Store at the Popular Art Museum (known as MAP, Spanish acronym) is a non-profit organization that offers artisans a place to display and market their handmade products through our stores in Mexico City.
The Store provides artisans with economic empowerment and the opportunity to improve their quality of life. We strongly support and believe in fair trade.
In 2006, we opened our doors as an organization specialized in Mexican folk art. Our main store is located inside the Popular Art Museum in Mexico City.
Each item in our stores is individually crafted by artists from small towns, indigenous communities or large cities in Mexico; each of them is carefully selected for our customers.
The product line of the store is made up of high quality objects representing the plurality of handicrafts in all regions of Mexico, including: textiles, jewelry, ceramic work, metalwork, wood carving, bone carving, lapidary art, feather work, saddlery, basketry and toys, among others.
The Store´s mission at the Popular Art Museum is to promote Mexican art and its creators by providing them with decent spaces to market their pieces, paying fair prices without intermediaries, and contributing to improve their quality of life and their families.
We intent to preserve and promote popular art as our country´s intangible cultural heritage through initiatives and projects that reveal, value, enrich, recognize and display the Mexican craftsmanship and its creators in national and international spheres.
IMPROVE the living conditions of artisans through work and employment.
ENCOURAGE the artisans to sell their pieces, so that they can continue their craft production and pass down the cultural heritage based on their knowledge, skills and techniques within their communities and abroad.
PROMOTE the preservation and transmission of popular, urban, rural and indigenous manifestations.
IDENTIFY cultural heritage at risk to develop safeguard actions.
